4 Day Kangaroo Island

Spend four days touring this unique island. Enjoy magnificent coastal scenery, see Australian native birds and animals in their natural habitat, and visit the major attractions of the island.

Day One

We depart Adelaide at approximately 7:00 am for Kangaroo Island, travelling along some of South Australia's magnificent coastline to Cape Jervis, where we board the Kangaroo Island Sealink Ferry to Penneshaw.

We follow the coast to Antechamber Bay, which has great views of it's long, wide stretch of beach, then stop at Chapman River for morning tea and a stroll along the beach.

We go to Cape Willoughby Lighthouse (completed in 1852, it was the first one built in South Australia), and the rugged Devil's Kitchen, which is adjacent to the Lighthouse.

We then head to Kingscote travelling via Windmill Bay and Mount Thisby (Prospect Hill), which is the highest point in the area, and provides a marvellous view of Pelican Lagoon, the rolling hills, and the Southern Ocean at Pennington Bay (a wonderful surf beach). Looking north on a clear day you can see Mount Lofty in the Adelaide Hills.

We stay at Kingscote

Day Two

On this day we visit the south coast of the island. Highlights include:

  • Seal Bay: a large sandy beach and dune area where Australian sea lions bask in the sun and nurse their young. With the guidance of a National Parks Ranger, we walk within just a few metres of the resting sea lions,

  • Little Sahara: an area of spectacular white sand dunes surrounded by bush vegetation. When you climb over the first ridge you are confronted by a second, much higher dune that, when scaled, reveals more dunes that are flanked by bushland,

  • Murray Lagoon: a Naturalist's delight where you can take a stroll amongst the habitat of various species of water birds,

  • D'Estrees Bay: an historic area which was once home to the whaling industry, and is a site of many ship wrecks,

  • Honey Farm (if time permits).

We stay overnight Flinders Chase Farm.

Day Three

The destination for today is the south west coast of the island. Highlights include:

  • Vivonne Bay: which is the base of the Cray fishing and game fishing boats,

  • Kelly Hills Caves: where we take a guided tour of the sinkholes and caverns that lead to caves of ornate calcite formations,

  • Flinders Chase National Park: one of Australia's largest National Parks (covering 74,000 hectares) where you can see many native Australian birds and animals in their natural habitat,

  • Rocky River: where you can see koalas in the nearby trees,

  • Cape du Couedic Lighthouse: which was constructed in 1906,

  • Admirals Arch: home to a colony of New Zealand Fur Seals,

  • Remarkable Rocks: a cluster of huge, weather-sculptured granite boulders perched on a granite dome that sweeps 75 metres to the sea.

In the evening we watch the Pelicans feeding at the Wharf.

We stay in Kingscote

Day Four

Today's highlights include sightseeing around Kingscote, including Cygnet River, Duck Lagoon and Emu Bay.

After lunch we head to Penneshaw to board the Kangaroo Island Sealink Ferry for the return trip back to Cape Jervis. We travel back to Adelaide (via the McLaren Vale wine region if time permits) arriving at 6:00 pm.
