Lake
Eyre North and Coober Pedy 4 Day Tour
Spend four days exploring Lake Eyre North, Woomera, William
Creek and Coober Pedy. A land of contrasts from red gibber
plains stretching to the horizon, mound springs creating
bush oases and wetlands, Red Gum lined creeks and vast
areas of grey salt bush and spiky spinifex.
Day
One
Depart Adelaide at 7am for the opal mining town of Andamooka,
travelling via Port Augusta. At Port Augusta visit the
Wadlata Outback Centre, learn about the origins of the
Flinders Ranges, the Aboriginal Dreaming, European settlement,
Explorers and much more.
After morning tea travel to Woomera, established in 1947
for launching experimental rockets, but now no longer
in operation. Visit the Woomera Heritage Centre and Missile
Park displaying examples of rockets, aircraft and weapons
associated with the testing range. Overnight accommodation
at Andamooka or Roxby Downs.
Day Two
After breakfast head to William Creek via the Borefield
Road and Oodnadatta Track. At William Creek visit the
Worlds most isolated Pub for a well-deserved Australian
beer. Followed by a walk along the Old Ghan Railway Line
to the Bridge at Breakfast Time Creek.
Continue on to William Creek visiting Bubbler Springs
and Blanche Cup Springs en route. Travel along the Oodnadatta
Track where there are abundant remnants of the Old Ghan
Railway line. An optional scenic flight over Lake Eyre
North and South is available here (at own expense).
Lake
Eyre North which covers 8,430 square kilometres, is 144
km long and 77 km wide is by far the larger of the two
lakes. The creek like Goyder Channel joins Lake Eyre South
to Lake Eyre North, whic at its narrowest is only 150
metres wide. At the lakes lowest point it is 15.2 mtres
below sea level and drains more than one sixth of the
continent. Overnight William Creek Hotel.
Day Three
Today head for Coober Pedy, an opal wonderland in the
heart of South Australia's vast Outback. Spend time visiting
mines and Interpretive Centres offering an insight into
the town and its mining operations.
Take time to visit one or more of the thirty opal shops
in Coober Pedy. Travel to Glendambo stopping to see the
Breakaway's Reserve and Moon Plain en route. Overnight
Glendambo.
Day Four
Follow the Stuart Highway south revisiting Port Augusta
as we continue on to Adelaide, arriving at 6pm.
