Northern
Flinders Ranges 4 Day Tour
Spend four days 4WD touring the beautiful and rugged Northern
Flinders Ranges. Experience and learn about Aboriginal
culture, music, storytelling, bush food, art and environment
from the Adnymathanha people.
Day
One
Depart Adelaide at 7am and travel to Port Augusta. At
Port Augusta visit the Wadlata Outback Centre, learn about
the origins of the Flinders Ranges, the Aboriginal Dreaming,
European settlement, Explorers and much more.
After morning tea head towards Wilpena Pound travelling
via Quorn and Hawker. From Hawker visit the Kanyaka Ruins
and Death Rock. For those feeling energetic enjoy an optional
climb to the Yourambulla Caves to see Aboriginal rock
painting. Continue to Wilpena Pound Resort with time for
a peaceful bush walk to Wangarra Lookouts overlooking
Wilpena Pound before dinner. Overnight accommodation.
Day
Two
Today travel to Arkaroola via Brachina Gorge. This Gorge
traces the geolocial history of the Flinders Ranges for
hundreds of million years. Then on to the Prairie Hotel
at Parachilna to sample some Aussie Tucker (optional).
After morning tea head to Iga Warta and spend some time
learning about the Adnymathanha Aboriginal people's culture
and environment. Participate in a bush tucker walk and/or
an Aboriginal art walk. This evening, after dinner we
spend some time sitting around a campfire sampling traditional
damper with quandong jam, listening to stories and music
of the Adnyamathanha People. Overnight at Iga Warta.
Day Three
After
breakfast head to Arkaroola visiting Paralana Hot Springs
where water emerges at a temperature of 80 degrees Celsius
from rocks containing Jasper and Ochre. Nearby is Yudnamutana
Gorge one of Australia's deepest Gorges.
Also visit Stubbs Waterhole an expanse of still water
in a delightful setting reflecting the green foliage of
gum trees and the blue sky, set deep between towering
steeply tilted layers of rock formed from the debris dropped
by melting icebergs approximately 700 million years ago.
Overnight accommodation at Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary.
Day Four
Depart Arkaroola for Adelaide travelling via Chambers
Gorge and Blinman. Next stop is Sacred Canyon for a short
walk into the Gorge. Sacred Canyon is one of the major
Aboriginal art sites in the Flinders Ranges.
After lunch at Wilpena Pound Resort head to Quorn, travelling
through Buckaringa Gorge and Warren Gorge, time permitting.
Stop for afternoon tea at Melrose and then continue journey
back to Adelaide. Arrive in Adelaide at approximately
6pm.
